The Importance of Daily Foot Care
To say the feet are critical to functioning is an understatement. They absorb the full impact of the body’s weight, while keeping the body balanced and upright. A host of problems can affect the feet, which can impact comfort and reduce mobility. These can include cracked skin, ingrown toenails, and injured bones. Following a simple foot care routine can help keep the skin, bones, and muscles of the feet functioning properly. Wearing well-fitted shoes that are supportive and comfortable are key factors in maintaining good foot health. If you shop for new shoes, it is important to do so later in the day when the feet are at their largest. The feet are then measured with the socks that will be worn with the intended shoes. It is beneficial for the feet to be exercised to stay strong, and simply walking can fulfill this need. Washing, drying, and moisturizing the feet daily, in addition to wearing socks that can add shock absorption, may help to protect the feet. If foot conditions develop, or if you would like more information about how you can take better care of your feet, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.
Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Naim G. Shaheed, DPM from Ankle and Foot Centers of Georgia. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Everyday Foot Care
Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.
It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Plantar Fasciitis Can Be Caused by Playing Pickleball
Pickleball has become a popular sport in recent years. It is a mix between tennis, badminton, and ping pong. While it is exciting to experience the thrill of victory, it may come with having foot pain. The game is played by pushing off on the ball of the foot, and this may cause the plantar fascia to undergo stress. When played frequently, it may lead to plantar fasciitis, which is the inflammation and irritation of the plantar fascia. This is the band of tissue that connects the heels to the toes, and provides the ability to walk and run. Effective stretches for the plantar fascia can begin with rolling the affected foot on a tennis ball or frozen water bottle. This can help to strengthen the arch of the foot. Some people find it helpful to wear custom-made orthotics, in addition to choosing shoes that fit correctly. If you are interested in playing pickleball, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can guide you toward techniques that can protect the plantar fascia.

Shoes That Fit Well Can Improve Foot Health
One of the best ways to care for your feet is by wearing shoes that can prevent foot problems and ease pain. It’s also important to find shoes that help reduce the chances of falling. Three main factors to consider when choosing footwear are activities, surfaces, and support. If you spend a great deal of time standing or running on hard surfaces, look for shoes with softer soles and insoles, as well as ample arch support. For ankle support and stability, lace-up boots are a good idea, with proper padding in the tongue and around the heel. Wearing the proper shoes for whatever activity you are doing, can be a big help in avoiding injuries. People with foot or toe deformities, such as bunions or hammertoes, may need wider shoes with a higher toe box to prevent calluses and corns. For more information on finding the proper shoe for your feet, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist.

Proper Shoe Fitting
Shoes have many different functions. They cushion our body weight, protect our feet, and allow us to safely play sports. You should always make sure that the shoes you wear fit you properly in order to avoid injuries and deformities such as: bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and more. It is important to note that although a certain pair of shoes might be a great fit for someone else, that doesn’t mean they will be a great fit for you. This is why you should always try on shoes before buying them to make sure they are worth the investment. Typically, shoes need to be replaced ever six months to one year of regular use.
Tips for Proper Shoe Fitting
- Select a shoe that is shaped like your foot
- Don’t buy shoes that fit too tight, expecting them to stretch to fit
- Make sure there is enough space (3/8” to ½”) for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up
- Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right
- Don’t select shoes by the size marked inside the shoe, but by how the shoe fits your foot
The shoes you buy should always feel as good as they look. Shoes that fit properly will last longer, feel better, and improve your way of life each day.

Cold Toes May Indicate Raynaud’s Phenomenon
A condition known as Raynaud’s phenomenon is a circulatory problem that causes the blood vessels in the extremities to narrow and restrict blood flow. This can cause the toes to become cold and even turn blue. There are two types of Raynaud’s phenomenon, primary and secondary. Primary has no known cause, but secondary may occur in conjunction with another underlying condition, such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. This type is far more serious and can lead to the formation of skin ulcers that may become gangrenous if ignored. Women are more at risk for Raynaud’s phenomenon, and it usually occurs in people in their 30s or younger. Emotional stress and smoking also can trigger attacks. When an attack occurs, the toes become exceedingly cold and may change color, which can evolve into burning and tingling when the toes finally get warmer. If you are having increasing problems with coldness and discoloration in the toes, it is suggested that you meet with a podiatrist who can properly diagnose your condition and offer treatment options.
While poor circulation itself isn’t a condition; it is a symptom of another underlying health condition you may have. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact Naim G. Shaheed, DPM of Ankle and Foot Centers of Georgia. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.
Poor Circulation in the Feet
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) can potentially lead to poor circulation in the lower extremities. PAD is a condition that causes the blood vessels and arteries to narrow. In a linked condition called atherosclerosis, the arteries stiffen up due to a buildup of plaque in the arteries and blood vessels. These two conditions can cause a decrease in the amount of blood that flows to your extremities, therefore resulting in pain.
Symptoms
Some of the most common symptoms of poor circulation are:
- Numbness
- Tingling
- Throbbing or stinging pain in limbs
- Pain
- Muscle Cramps
Treatment for poor circulation often depends on the underlying condition that causes it. Methods for treatment may include insulin for diabetes, special exercise programs, surgery for varicose veins, or compression socks for swollen legs.
As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.
